Good Personal Hygiene Tips for Kids

Good personal hygiene doesn’t just make you feel great but also helps your body function better and can keep nasty germs and viruses away. Children must develop healthy hygiene habits like cleaning their skin, brushing their teeth and hair from the early days.

Skin is the largest organ in the human body and is crucial in keeping you healthy. You can contract viruses, become sick, or your body won’t be able to function properly if you don’t wash it. The best way to cleanse your body is with water, mild soap, or body wash.

Children also need to understand the importance of washing their hands and how they can protect their health by doing so. Direct them to wash their hands after using the toilet, coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose (or touching any body fluid) before eating or touching/preparing food.

There are ways of making washing hands fun, and many specialists suggest teaching your kids to sing a song while washing their hands. That way, you can make sure your kids will wash their hands for an extended amount of time. Teach them to sing the Alphabet or Happy Birthday songs as they wash their hands.
For those times when your kids don’t have soap around, it is fine to use a hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol in it. However, it is not the best solution, as it won’t eliminate all types of germs. Hand sanitisers also don’t work well if hands are dirty or greasy.

Ensure your child also takes a frequent bath or shower to avoid a build-up of dirt and odour. Wearing clean underwear and socks (as well as clothes) is essential for the right level of personal hygiene, and your child will take such habits into their adult life.

It is needless to say that brushing teeth is crucial for overall health and a person’s confidence. Kids should have this habit developed from an early age and brush their teeth twice a day - morning and evening.
